Course Overview Course Elements

This two-day course introduces the principles and equipment involved in gas testing operations and, through a combination of classroom and practical work, provides the information required to carry out gas testing on all activities including confined space entry (CSE).

The course is aimed at personnel preparing to work as Authorised Gas Testers and is required for those performing a test for oxygen, flammable and toxic gases up to and including working in confined spaces. Persons undertaking Safety Watch duties at the entrance to a confined space should also be trained to AGT level 1 standard.

  • Introduction
  • OPITO
  • Confined space criteria
  • The hazards of operations within an oxygen deficient, toxic or flammable environment
  • Carrying out a suitable and sufficient risk assessment
  • Using safe systems of work
  • The implications of organisational and statutory requirements
  • Interpreting operational requirements
  • Selecting and using PPE and RPE
  • Working within the Permit to Work system
  • The operating principles of atmosphere monitoring and measuring equipment
  • Gas detector pre-start checks
  • Calibrating the instruments used in atmospheric testing
  • How to set up the relevant detector for each gas testing application

PRACTICAL DEMONSTRATIONS

  • Gas detector pre-start checks
  • Calibrating the instruments used in atmospheric testing
  • How to set up the relevant detector for each gas testing application

PRESENTATIONS

  • The range and frequency of tests
  • Acceptable levels of flammable and toxic gases
  • Performing gas tests in sequence
  • Obtaining a representative atmosphere sample
  • Monitoring and retesting
  • Where to site ongoing monitoring equipment
  • Interpreting and documenting the results

PRACTICAL EXERCISES

  • Gas detector pre-start checks
