Course Overview Course Elements

Operators will be trained or assessed in the safe use of a Gantry Crane and associated lifting accessories. The course comprises classroom based review and discussion of legislation, responsibilities, equipment and techniques used although emphasis will be placed on practical demonstrations and exercises using the overhead crane to underpin learning outcomes.

Course Objectives

A written examination will be completed by all candidates. Candidates must pass the examination paper to receive a certificate of training. Please note that this course can only take place at clients own sites.

  • Introduction to the HASAWA 1974
  • Lifting operations and lifting equipment regulations S.I.2307
  • Provision and use of work equipment regulations S.I.2306 & other relevant legislation
  • BS7121 safe use of cranes
  • Preparation and use of lifting plans and risk assessments
  • Pre-use inspection of overhead crane
  • Pre-use inspection of lifting accessories
  • Assessment of load weights
  • Choosing correct slings and slinging methods for different load types
  • Appreciation of angles and tensions
  • Lifting, transfer and landing loads
  • Tag lines
  • Correct hand and radio signals
  • Correct use of controls
  • Correct travelling of crane and loads
  • Emergency shut down of crane
  • Written Test

Certificates awarded after successful completion of the course will be valid for a three year period after which re-certification must take place.
